June 9 Clinical Seminar Addresses Wound Assessment and Pain Management
By Cyndi Spencer Last week, we highlighted the pain management portion of Care Providers of Minnesota’s June 9 Seminar: Assessment of Wounds and Pain Management Best Practices in Long-Term Care. Sharing equal time on the agenda is a presentation titled: A Clinical Guide to Pressure Ulcer Assessment. Presenter Dr. Chuck Gokoo, MD, CWS, FACCWS, is the chief medical officer for American Medical Technologies (AMT). Early in his 30-year medical career, he recognized a need for science-based interventions in wound management. This led to his collaborating with specialists in conducting large outcome-based clinical trials for the medical/wound products industry. Recognizing a need for practical application, Dr. Gokoo then transitioned from research to advancing the needed wound management strategies by providing education to numerous clinicians in the field. Dr. Gokoo states, “The best practice for pressure ulcers depends on accurate assessment and differential diagnosis to effectuate management. Assessment drives therapy management and signals progress or problems in the healing process. Improperly or incompletely assessed wounds/ulcers can create all types of problems, including incorrect treatment.” This segment of the seminar will assist facilities in maintaining compliance regarding the current clinical standards of practice of wound/ulcer assessment. Teaching material is based upon current standards of wound/ulcer management and will review the changes in clinical practice in long-term care facilities as they relate to various wound/ulcer types. Improved communication concerning resident care in preventing wound/ulcer occurrence and management of residents with a wound/ulcer will also be a focus. For the other half of the program, Dr. Gokoo will discuss the epidemiology of pain in the long-term care setting; describe barriers to accurate pain assessment; and discuss factors to improve pain management.
