Elevator Upgrade Deadlines Are Delayed by the Legislature
By Doug Beardsley Just when it appeared that our elected officials passed very few laws this year, along comes one that will be beneficial to providers with multi-story buildings. On May 18, 2011 the governor signed into law language that amends Minnesota Statutes 201, section 326B.175. The amended language provides up to a three-year extension for building owners to bring their elevators up to compliance with previously passed requirements. New final compliance dates are determined by the date the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) or the municipality conducting elevator inspections within its jurisdiction notified the building owner of the new code requirements, AND the date the building owner filed or will file a compliance plan. The specifics of the new compliance deadline are:
Building owners who have not yet completed the required elevator upgrades should check their records to determine their notification dates and begin the process of filing a compliance plan.
