Department of Veterans Affairs Posts Open Deputy Commissioner Position

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has posted an open deputy commissioner position on the State of Minnesota careers website. MDVA is a cabinet-level state agency dedicated to serving Minnesota veterans and their families. It has two divisions, Veterans Healthcare and Veterans Programs and Services. The Veteran’s Healthcare Division operates five (5) veterans homes located throughout the state, and is responsible to provide quality care services for veterans and qualified spouses. Each home is managed by a licensed nursing home administrator. These administrators, along with several administrative managers (including those for communications, finance, human resources, information technology, legislative affairs and others) report to this position. The open deputy commissioner position reports to the commissioner, who is appointed by the governor. The MDVA operates on a biennial budget cycle, which consists of state general funds, federal funds, miscellaneous revenues and donations. The Healthcare Division’s biennial budget is over $191 million, and it employs about 1500 staff.

Position requirements include:

  • Must be a veteran of the armed forces of the United States as defined in section 197.447. Refer to Minnesota Statute 196.02.
  • Must have at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible health care administrative experience, with at least five (5) years of high level supervisory, managerial or director experience.
  • Knowledge of health care-related regulations and compliance requirements; knowledge of reimbursement process, budgeting concepts, funding sources and opportunities.
  • Knowledge of governmental and legislative processes.
  • Ability to effectively manage a multi-million dollar budget.
  • Ability to effectively oversee large construction and capital improvement projects.
  • Precise, polished and articulate in oral and written communications in order to represent the needs and desires of the veterans, their families, the Department and other stakeholders.
