National Summit Addressing Housing, Health and Long-Term Care Issues for LGBT Elders to Be Webcast on December 7
By Phil Manz The Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Administration on Aging in the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights are convening a summit to address housing, health and long-term care issues for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) elders on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Read the agenda here. The webcast will display at http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/webcasts/schedule. Follow along and participate on Twitter using the hashtag #LGBThousing or email questions during the webcast to LBGTelderhousing@hud.gov. The day will bring together advocates and practitioners from across the country to highlight existing barriers for LGBT elders, as well as explore future possibilities for promoting current efforts to support housing and long-term care designed for LGBT elders. Demographic shifts across the country have highlighted issues and challenges for older Americans. This is especially true for the LGBT elder community. LGBT elders have a number of stresses that expose them to particular vulnerabilities. For example, LGBT elders are more likely than other elders to age without the benefits of a partner and/or children and other family supports, increasing their reliance on assisted living and long-term care. In addition, even more affluent LGBT elders can be at risk, as discrimination and other legal barriers can make it difficult for them to access housing and long-term care. Phil Manz |
