Care Providers of Minnesota Introduces Gerontological Nurse Certification Exam Preparation Program
By Doug Beardsley

Care Providers of Minnesota Service Corporation is excited to introduce Gero Prep — a 10-module online learning program that prepares RNs to pass the Gerontological Certification exam of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Gero Prep is a joint program of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing. Gero Prep expertly equips RNs to pass the national Gerontological Certification exam:

  • Created expressly to expand the knowledge, skills, competencies, personal and professional growth of registered nurses (RNs) in long-term care facilities.
  • Prepares RNs for attainment of national certification as gerontological nurses (credential RN–BC: registered nurse–board certified) through rigorous testing by the American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC).
  • National certification is a badge of quality. It signifies the highest standard of clinical and leadership excellence. And it assures employers, residents and families of quality nursing care.
  • In facilities employing certified RNs, key quality indicators — including patient outcomes, patient satisfaction and RN satisfaction — have shown marked improvement.
  • To date, RNs who’ve taken this Gero Prep course have a 96% exam pass rate.

Care Providers of Minnesota Service Corporation has contracted with AHCA/NCAL/UNMCCN to make available preferred Gero Prep rates for RNs working at organizations affiliated with Care Providers of Minnesota. In addition, these rates will be discounted an additional 33% if ordered by December 31, 2011 (early adopter savings).

Certification as a gerontological nurse is not for everyone. To qualify to become a certified gerontological nurse, the RN must:

  • Have a current active RN licensure in a U.S. state or territory — or the legally recognized equivalent in another country.
  • Have at least two years of full time practice as an RN.
  • Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of gerontological nursing practice in the last three years.
  • Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in gerontological nursing within the last three years — fully satisfied by this Gero Prep certification training program.

Following are prices for the 10-module online Gero Prep program:

Care Providers of Minnesota members

$600 $400 until December 31, 2011!

Non-Care Providers of Minnesota members

$900 $600 until December 31, 2011!

Additionally, there is a cost of $90/learner for the course textbook, including shipping. The learner will receive a hard copy, as well as unlimited access to the e-book version.

Does your facility or community have more than one RN you would like to enroll in Gero Prep? We have also negotiated discounted pricing if you have more than four RNs interested in the program:

4–10 learners

2% discount on total package, plus cost of all textbooks.

11+ learners

5% discount on total package, plus cost of all textbooks.
