Reminder: Time Running Out on EMA Appeals
By Patti Cullen, CAE

In the December 2, 2011 issue of Action, we wrote about the end of payments under the Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA) program for most medical and long-term care services. The article can be accessed at http://news.careproviders.org/careact/issues/2011-12-02/index.html.

Please note there is an Important and Time Sensitive provision: Appeal Deadline is December 30.

The consensus view is that all EMA patients and residents currently receiving services covered by EMA should be told of their right to appeal the discontinuation of EMA services and/or eligibility. Do everything you can to inform affected people of their rights and of assistance with the appeal that may be available. In some instances, an appeal may result in continuation of the coverage until the appeal is resolved. Patients, residents and others enrolled in EMA MUST FILE AN APPEAL BY DECEMBER 30. After that, it is too late.
