SAGE launching support group for LGB&T elders
By Patti Cullen, CAE The national SAGE office is preparing to launch a support group for LGB&T older adults that will meet via telephone. The support group will provide a safe and nurturing space for LGB&T older adults to build relationships, talk about experiences, gain emotional support and overcome isolation. A companion support group for LGB&T caregivers is being established. The caregiver support group will provide support for individuals caring for a parent, partner or friend. Both support groups are free. For more information contact Amanda Umhoefer at aumhoever@sageusa.org or call 212-741-2247 x294. SAGE is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. SAGE has pioneered programs and services for the aging LGBT community, provided technical assistance and training to expand opportunities for LGBT older people across the country, and provided a national voice on LGBT aging issues. In 2005, SAGE became the first official LGBT delegate at the White House Conference on Aging. In 2010, SAGE was awarded a three-year $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Administration on Aging to seed the creation of the nation's only National Resource Center on LGBT Aging.
