World Elder Abuse Day — save the date
By Heidi Holste

The fourth annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be held on June 13, 2012. This free annual event is held at William Mitchell College of Law (875 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105) and is designed to bring concerned people together to discuss best practices for preventing and responding to the maltreatment of vulnerable adults in Minnesota and across the world.

The conference offers unique training opportunities and information about resources, programs, and agencies to assist when maltreatment of a vulnerable adult is suspected or becomes apparent. Globally, WEAAD is intended to create awareness of vulnerable adult issues that will sustain and move prevention efforts forward throughout years to come. The content of the day is intended to broaden the horizons of those who have experience in services or programs designed for vulnerable adults. Some topics planned for the breakout sessions include (this list may change as the event comes closer):

  • Fatality review
  • Cultural issues
  • Faith communities
  • Worker safety
  • Grief
  • Homelessness
  • Suicide
  • GLBT
  • Elder mediation
  • Identity theft
  • Domestic violence

Brief course descriptions will be available prior to registration. A flyer will be sent out in the coming weeks with more information and finalized information for speakers, along with information on how to register and supporting organizations. Registration this year is again limited to 250 people, and the link to register online will be deactivated once that number has been reached. Certificates of attendance will be provided at the end of the day to event participants who may wish to submit for continuing education.

As soon as the link to register is up and running, we will publicize that so that you may register. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Kirchen (jennifer.kirchen@state.mn.us or 651-431-2546).
