Free Video Conferences on Abuse and Neglect in Nursing Facilities

The Minnesota Department of Human Services Aging and Adult Services Division, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, are presenting free video training on the Assessment, Investigation, and Prevention of Adult Abuse and Neglect in Nursing Facilities. The training is free; however, pre-registration is required.
There are two parts to the training. Part 1 is on April 15 and includes the topics: Identification & Reporting of Potential Abuse, Nuts & Bolts of Effective Internal Investigation and Interview Processes, and Best Practices for Promoting a Safe Environment for Residents and Staff in LTC. Part 2 is April 29 and covers the topic: Providing Care with Dignity and Respect. There are morning and afternoon sessions available for each session. See below for further information.

Part 1
April 15, 2008
Description: Identification & Reporting of Potential Abuse
This session will provide information on the federal and state definitions of abuse and information on the requirements for electronic submission requirements of reports and investigations.
Presenter: Sue Jackson, Assistant Director, Office of Health Facility Complaints
At the end of this session participants will:
1. Understand the federal and state definitions of abuse and the federal and state reporting requirements.
2. Understand the federal and state reporting timelines and required actions for reporting and investigating potential abuse in nursing homes.
3. Know the components required for electronic filing for nursing home reports and investigations for state and federal reporting of potential abuse.
Nuts & Bolts of Effective Internal Investigation and Interview Processes
This session will provide specific techniques and steps to effectively investigate potential abuse in your facility. The presenter will provide information and practical tips on how to conduct internal interviews and how to build relationships with local law enforcement agencies to enhance the protection of vulnerable adults.
Presenter: Linda Malzahn is a retired law enforcement officer with years experience in investigating and interviewing allegations of abuse and neglect. Ms Malzhan will share methods and processes needed for conducting successful investigations and interviews for allegations of abuse and neglect. Ms. Malzahn has many years of experience as a law enforcement officer and working with community efforts to improve the protection of vulnerable adults.
At the end of this session participants will:
1. Have information and practical techniques to effectively conduct internal interviews to effectively investigate potential abuse.
2. Have information, processes, examples and tools to improve the investigation process in your nursing home.
3. Be able to build effective relationships with local law enforcement agencies to enhance the protection of vulnerable adults in your nursing home and community.
Best Practices for Promoting a Safe Environment for Residents and Staff in LTC
During this session participants will hear a case study of a nursing home that implemented a team and system approach for preventing and identifying potential abuse and neglect.
Presenters: Tom Thompson is a nursing home administrator with many years experience in long-term care and Maria Friedland, a director of nursing, has worked in long-term care for several years. Mr. Thompson and Ms. Friedland will share their experiences and success strategies for implementing a team approach to prevention, identification and reporting of abuse and neglect. They will also share techniques and methods that have been successful in improving the relationship and respect among residents and staff of diverse backgrounds.
At the end of this session participants will:
1. Understand the processes involved in implementing a system and team approach to prevention and reporting of potential abuse.
2. Be able to identify ways to improve hiring, orientation, and educational systems that support and value prevention, early detection, and reporting signs and symptoms of potential abuse.
3. Understand the techniques and tools used by one nursing home to improve understanding and working among and with diverse staff and residents.

Presenter(s): Diane Peters, RN, MS, and nursing home administrator, has over 35 years of experience in healthcare including work as a clinician, a healthcare administrator, regional assisted living director, educator, healthcare lobbyist, and a quality improvement consultant. Her background has provided educational and practical experience in acute care, long-term care, assisted living and home health/hospice. Diane has served on several national and regional committees and work groups focused on culture change and quality improvement in healthcare delivery and healthcare workforce development. Diane has made numerous presentations and workshops on quality leadership, management, and organizational system improvement.
Description: Providing Care with Dignity and Respect
This session will explore the system wide processes and steps needed to ensure that the focus of care and services is on the individual needs of the resident and is supported by the care practices, environment, and work place practices in the nursing home. The session will explore the definitions and types of abuse, neglect, and misappropriation of property and identify ways to improve care and
work place practices to prevent abuse and implement a culture of care and safety. Case studies, examples, tools and techniques will be shared to identify and prevent staff burn out, improve staff relationships and communication and establish practices that promote respect and dignity for each resident and each person who provides care and services in the nursing home.
Target Audience: Nursing facility staff.
Learning Objectives
Goal 1: Understand the definitions and be able to give examples of types of abuse, neglect and misappropriation of property.
Goal 2: Be able to identify at least three work place practices to improve relationships and prevent staff burn out and abuse in long-term care.
Goal 3: Have tools and information to implement system and process changes that will foster a culture of safety and promote and improve dignity and care practices.
